My name is Valeria. I am a sophomore majoring in Gender Studies and Film Studies. I am currently in Ecuador, where I was born and raised, quarantining with my family during the worldwide chaos. If you have seen the news lately you probably have heard about Ecuador’s catastrophic situation due to COVID-19. As a country we are ill equipped to deal with a pandemic, so people here are freaking out to say the least. Thankfully, my family and I are safe and taking all the precautions necessary.
The reason I have decided to take Film History: Silent Film is because cinematography is probably my favorite component in a film. I feel like if a movie does not have sound to help suture the viewer into the story world, it automatically, puts more "pressure" in the cinematography and the mise-en-scene to achieve that suture. I am curious to see if that is actually true, and if it is true, how do cinematographers and editors achieve that suture in classical films.
Stay safe!
Vale

I'm glad you are staying safe and I'm so happy to be in a class with you! That's an interesting point about cinematography, and I'm curious as to what you think about "silent" film cinematography at the end of the term.
